Thanks, Steven. Will check it out. Been tinkering with gnuchess version 3.1+ for maybe a year. It's an ancient console program that could work with Xchess, an ancient gui that I can't compile because it needs an ancient Xwindow library almost impossible to find.

Check out Scid Vs PC http://scidvspc.sf.net, my fork of Scid. Play against computer in "Play->Tactical game", play on internet in the "Play->Internet" menu. It's still not straight forward though , but cool once you have the knack... Scid is super powerful and supports many engines.

The main gripe cited in "More than a few criticisms..." is one I have thought and said too, that there's an adolescent rush to get the next version out instead of fixing the bugs. There are not only unfixed bugs but a constantly changing platform for developers to shoot at. I like to update my system by compiling source, but don't like the circular dependencies that occasionally crop up, such as in the files needed to build recent GTK+ 2 releases. And when you test GTK+, doesn't it scare you a bit to see the many "make check" errors? Instead of going on to the next new version, the bugs ought to be fixed so GTK+ tests mostly clean.

Open-source advertises that "with many eyes, all bugs are easy to find and fix" or something like that. The problem is that many of those eyes are developing the next application, library or Linux distro. There are so many people developing distros that it takes away from the person-power that ought to be doing debugging and testing.

I've done testing for Mozilla software for several years, but my platform isn't new enough to test the latest, so I've been trying to update needed files and became aware of the need for more debugging by trying to upgrade from source, running "make check." finding script bugs and library conflicts, etc.

I'd suggest that release developers use well-debugged compilers like GCC 4.2.4, noticeably cleaner than 4.2.2, 4.3.2 and especially 4.2.3. GCC, etc could use additional help with debugging and fixing too.

It's also aggravating that nominally open-source free-software Linux distro developers like possibly Mandriva object to people accessing their GPL software. People who want to help with what open-source is meant to do should not be turned away.

I agree with the comment that wine+arena+chess engines is the best quick solution for strong chess competition under Linux. Arena is a chess interface program that allows one to install many engines and have engine-to-engine tournaments that establish relative ratings. I had more than a dozen installed, both UCI and the older protocol that Xboard/Winboard uses. Rybka seems to be the best. BUT---Arena is a Windows program and needs Windows engines. Installing under Windows might be better---haven't ever installed a Windows program using wine. It would be nice if the Arena programmer would port it to Linux at least as source. I liked an older Arena beta better than the latest beta, btw.
